A three part (within a single movement) piece, the [First] Vibraphone Sonata is designed for the advanced performer looking for serious literature for the instrument. The mostly linear piece is well-built on a compositional framework incorporating 12-tone pitch and rhythmic techniques. This means that while some harmonic or rhythmic connections might not be readily apparent to the listener (especially to those not familiar with late-20th century music), the piece has a very unified feel. In other words, one might not know for sure what is going on structurally, but musically it all makes sense and is enjoyable to listen to. This piece is an excellent introduction to this style of music for both performer and listener. All dampening is left to the discretion of the performer.
